Talk on Genetic Counseling on 3rd Dec 2017

On 3rd December 2017 on the occasion of International day for Persons with Disabilities a talk was organised for the parents and staff members of SBP in the school premises on the topic: “Genetic counseling for management and prevention of genetic disorders” by Dr. Bani Bandana Ganguly, Research Director at MGM hospital, Vashi.
25 parents and 20 staff members attended the session. Dr. Bani Ganguly spoke about the importance of genetic counseling. Disability may be inborn or acquired. In order to know the root cause of the disability genetic counseling is essential and this can also help prevent further incidents of disabilities.
There is low awareness not only among the general public but also among clinicians about genetic counseling. Double marker, triple marker and NIPT screening tests are suggested by clinicians but not genetic study. She requested parents to look upon genetic counseling not as an expense but as an investment. Genetic tests can be done at childhood, adolescence, adulthood, prior to pregnancy and even during pregnancy.
Genetic counseling should be done by Geneticist for proper guidance and information.
The presentation was followed by question and answer session. The day ended with a vote of thanks by the Managing Trustee.
